Skate Park Safety in Sight!

The hedge around the skatepark has not been cut for many years and had grown very high and thick. The Town Council agreed to lower and cut back the hedges and to cut a second entrance to make it safer and more accessible. The aim is to strike a balance between making the skatepark more visible for safety reasons, whilst leaving sufficient trees and hedges in place to soften the visual impact of the park.

No mature trees have been cut. The hazel coppice has been cut back hard, and while this looks stark at present, it will regrow quickly.

The cuttings will be chipped as soon as the ground is dry enough for the machinery to get to the site.

Community speedwatch newsletter

Please see the latest newsletter from the community speedwatch team:

February 2024

Dear Charlbury residents,

We are pleased to inform you that the new Speed Indication Device (SID) is now up and running. The SID is a device that displays the speed of approaching vehicles and warns them if they are exceeding the speed limit. The SID also collects data on the traffic volume and speed patterns in the area.

The SID has been situated on Grammar School Hill since January 29th, 2024. The data for that location shows that the average speed of vehicles is 21 mph with the SID in place. However, some vehicles have been recorded driving at speeds between 43 & 46 mph, which is dangerously high and poses a risk to pedestrians and other road users. We urge all drivers to respect the speed limit and drive safely.

The SID has also been deployed on Nine Acres Lane from January 20th to February 20th, 2024. The data for that location reveals a worrying trend of speeding violations. 70% of the vehicles have been detected driving above the speed limit of 20 mph. The top speed recorded was a staggering 63 mph, which is more than three times the limit. This is very concerning, as Nine Acres Lane is a residential area with many children and elderly people. The SID has now been moved to a new location just before the new zebra crossing outside Charlbury Primary School, to help slow the traffic down and ensure the safety of the school children & pedestrians.

We would like to thank you for your support and cooperation in our efforts to reduce speeding and improve road safety in Charlbury. We hope both SIDs will help raise awareness and encourage responsible driving behaviour. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel free to contact us at cswcharlbury@outlook.com

Sincerely,

The Charlbury Speed Watch Team

Exciting new opportunity

Charlbury Community Market Co-ordinator

The Town Council is looking for a co-ordinator to support its vision for the market and to develop a vibrant, community-focused market.

The role is self-funded*: the successful co-ordinator will run a weekly stall at the market on behalf of small businesses unable to attend themselves and agree a percentage of the profits with each small business as commission. Experience to date shows that running such a stall is profitable. (* This is not an offer of employment by the Council).

For more details and other responsibilities go to https://charlbury-tc.gov.uk/charlbury-market/
