February 2024
Dear Charlbury residents,
We are pleased to inform you that the new Speed Indication Device (SID) is now up and running. The SID is a device that displays the speed of approaching vehicles and warns them if they are exceeding the speed limit. The SID also collects data on the traffic volume and speed patterns in the area.
The SID has been situated on Grammar School Hill since January 29th, 2024. The data for that location shows that the average speed of vehicles is 21 mph with the SID in place. However, some vehicles have been recorded driving at speeds between 43 & 46 mph, which is dangerously high and poses a risk to pedestrians and other road users. We urge all drivers to respect the speed limit and drive safely.
The SID has also been deployed on Nine Acres Lane from January 20th to February 20th, 2024. The data for that location reveals a worrying trend of speeding violations. 70% of the vehicles have been detected driving above the speed limit of 20 mph. The top speed recorded was a staggering 63 mph, which is more than three times the limit. This is very concerning, as Nine Acres Lane is a residential area with many children and elderly people. The SID has now been moved to a new location just before the new zebra crossing outside Charlbury Primary School, to help slow the traffic down and ensure the safety of the school children & pedestrians.
We would like to thank you for your support and cooperation in our efforts to reduce speeding and improve road safety in Charlbury. We hope both SIDs will help raise awareness and encourage responsible driving behaviour. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please feel free to contact us at cswcharlbury@outlook.com
Sincerely,
The Charlbury Speed Watch Team
