Ken & Margaret Taylor presented with Honoured Citizen Award
On Saturday 26th January, well over 100 local volunteers packed the War Memorial Hall to witness the presentation of the first ever Charlbury Honoured Citizen Award to Ken & Margaret Taylor, well-known and long standing residents of the town who have dedicated an immense amount of time and effort to the community and who epitomise the spirit and commitment to the town that has made Charlbury the lively and supportive place that it is today.
The award was presented by Peter Kenrick, chairman of the town council, who explained that the council had introduced the award to be a tribute to individuals who have given dedicated voluntary service, probably over many years, and have made a significant positive difference to the community and to the lives of residents. He congratulated Ken and Margaret and thanked them for their dedication to the community.
The presentation event was also a general celebration of volunteering in the town, to thank all local volunteers in recognition of the invaluable contribution they make to the community. Those attending represented more than 40 volunteer organisations operating in the town.
Following the presentation, both Ken and Margaret delighted those present with entertaining reminiscences and memories of Charlbury in earlier times.
We expect this event to become a regular feature of the Charlbury calendar so if you would like to nominate any Charlbury resident for a future Honoured Citizen Award please contact the town clerk at charlburytc@btinternet.com for details.

Pickleball - are you missing out?
A great way to get fit or stay active - a very fun & social sport as well as being easy to learn to play for all ages. Having experience of rackets sports if a plus but by no means necessary to be able to play.

Another load of donations for Calais
Sleeping bags, blankets, tents, warm clothing, socks, underwear, scarves and hats, tough footwear, soap, deodorant, a couple of mobile phones -- and more besides, all collected in the Charlbury Refugee Action Group men's clothing appeal this month. It's going to Calais in a few days time with a local volunteer. What she can't fit in her car this time will go next month.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible.
We've also just donated £2000 to the charity Help Refugees. That's the proceeds from two events we held in January: our annual Bring and Buy, and our concert with Brian Boothby. They are helping refugees and asylum seekers not only in France but across Europe and especially on the Greek islands and mainland.

Application for motor traffic to use the Salt Way turned down
Oxfordshire County Council has rejected a bid by the Trail Riders Felllowship to open up the Salt Way track to motorised access.
OCC's decision notice says:
"Stonesfield 9, Spelsbury 31&32 and Chipping Norton 4&5. From the Over Norton / Chipping Norton parish boundary near Chapel House at SP329278 to the road near Callow Farm Stonesfield at SP395181
"Oxfordshire County Council hereby gives notice that the above application submitted by Mr P Cole on behalf of the Trail Riders Fellowship on 30 March 2006, for an Order under Section 53(2) of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to modify the Definitive Map and Statement has been determined... The Council has determined that no Order to modify the Definitive Map and Statement will be made as the rights claimed by the application were extinguished by the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006."
The detailed report by Mike Walker, Principal Officer, Countryside Records at OCC, refutes the arguments made by the TRF. It concludes that the primary use of this and other routes in the five years before 2006 was not for motor traffic and says that "insufficient evidence has been put forward by the applicants to support any contention that an exemption does apply".

Inaugural Charlbury Honoured Citizen Award for Ken and Margaret Taylor
On behalf of the Town Council, I am delighted to announce that the inaugural Charlbury Honoured Citizen Award will be presented jointly to Ken & Margaret Taylor at 11:30am on Saturday 26th January 2019 in the Memorial Hall.
Ken & Margaret masterminded the Evergreens for over 25 years arranging holidays, local events and fundraising. They were also stalwarts of the Street Fair team for many years as well as organising other events to raise money for the Corner House and Memorial Hall and working with the Charlbury Branch of the Royal British Legion. Over the years they have dedicated an immense amount of time and effort to the community and they epitomise the spirit and commitment to the town that has made Charlbury the lively and supportive place that it is today. Congratulations Ken & Margaret.
Last year, the council announced the introduction of this new award to be given as a tribute to an individual who has given dedicated voluntary service, probably over many years, and as a consequence has made a significant positive difference to the Community and to the lives of residents. We are sure that this award will be the first of many over the coming years. Thank you to all who submitted nominations.
Alongside the presentation of this award, the event on the 26th will be a celebration of volunteering in Charlbury. The success and vibrancy of the community depends so much on the efforts of many volunteers and in recognition of this I would like to extend a welcome to all Charlbury volunteers, past and present, to join us for this celebration on Saturday morning in the Memorial Hall. If you are able to come along, please do make sure that you are in the hall by 11:15 at the very latest, thank you.
