Charlbury Community Speedwatch Launches New SID
Peter Kenrick, Chairman of our Town Council has unveiled the latest tool aimed at reducing driving speeds through Charlbury. M-SID VARIO is a high-technology radar-controlled device designed to educate drivers as to their speed in a large format visual display. Now officially known as SID, the device has been provided by the Town Council to the Charlbury Community Speedwatch Team, led by Jim Holah.
Peter confirmed that “the town council is delighted to support this excellent volunteer initiative which is helping to address local residents’ real road safety concerns, particularly for pedestrians. Many thanks to Jim and the Speedwatch Team - this is another example of willing volunteers having a real impact on our community and making Charlbury a great place to live.”
Representing Thames Valley Police, PC Rob Webb remarked that "as one of the Police officers providing training for the Community Speedwatch programme, I am very pleased to support and encourage Parish and Town Councils to get involved. The aim of the scheme is to reduce the number of speeding motorists travelling through our towns and villages. Charlbury is a good example of how this scheme works.”
Charlbury Community Speedwatch Team Leader, Jim Holah added that "our group of resident volunteers are pleased to be working together with the Town Council and Thames Valley Police to challenge those drivers speeding through our town. We're especially grateful to the Town Council for their funding support and to Thames Valley Police for their practical help and follow-up in contacting drivers. Our joint activities (where the Speedwatch Team and Police Officers operate together in one location) have a direct impact on drivers and we hope to do more of these. Our message is simple: respect our town and the people who live here by driving slowly, with care, through Charlbury."
SID not only shows drivers their speed but will provide additional messages such as THANK YOU for those driving within the limit or SLOW DOWN for those speeding. It will also say SCHOOL ZONE in the vicinity of the School or the Nursery Schools. SID records the speeds of traffic against time and date in both directions and the data can be used for future analysis. SID is fully mobile and motorists can expect to see it facing them throughout Charlbury in the future.
