The PROBUS Club of Charlbury and District
Charlbury Probus is an informal and relaxed club for semi-retired and retired people from all backgrounds and walks of life. We aim to provide a variety of activities, visits and social events to entertain and amuse our members and their guests. New members are always welcome to join us at our lunch meetings and Social events, the contact details can be found at the foot of this page.
Lunches are quite informal and are held monthly at Sturdy's Castle, near Kidlington, a 20 minute drive from Charlbury. To assist in travelling to our lunches we have a successful car share scheme in operation. There is usually a one or two course meal, which is followed by a guest speaker. Speakers in the past have come from a variety of backgrounds including medical, historical, local interest and charitable. The club produces a monthly newsletter called 'Kingfisher' in which all details of the club and forthcoming events can be found, you do not have to be a member to receive the newsletter and anyone with a possible interest in Probus activities can request being placed on the circulation list. To request a copy of The Kingfisher please email Mike White at cpckingfisher.ed@gmail.com
Following our summer break, we commence are regular monthly lunches on Wednesday September 2nd, at Sturdy's Castle, Kidlington. Our guest speaker for this lunch will be councillor Liz Leffman who stepped down as leader of Oxford County Council in May this year. The following month, on Wednesday the 7th October we have another politician, Sean Woodcock,MP for the Banbury Constituency, which of course includes Charlbury, with a talk entitled 'Life as an MP in the new Banbury Constituency'. Our final visiting speaker for 2026 will be John Ellison FCA, who will give us, what promises to be a fascinating look into the world of Forensic Accounting, this will be on Wednsday the 4th of November. If you are interested in attending this, or any of our lunches and after lunch talks please contact the club secretary, Simon Handley email: simon.handley8@icloud.com
During the year we also offer opportunities to attend special events, thus far this year we have enjoyed a classical concert at the Birmingham Symphony Hall and a Civil War Walk at Banbury, and yet to come we have a visit to Waterperry Gardens.
