Probus Club of Charlbury

The PROBUS Club of Charlbury and District

Charlbury Probus is an informal and relaxed club for semi-retired and retired people from all backgrounds and walks of life. We aim to provide a variety of activities, visits and social events to entertain and amuse our members and their guests. New members are always welcome to join us at our lunch meetings and Social events, the contact details can be found at the foot of this page.

Lunches are quite informal and are held monthly at Sturdy's Castle, near Kidlington, a 20 minute drive from Charlbury. To assist in travelling to our lunches we have a successful car share scheme in operation. There is usually a one or two course meal, which is followed by a guest speaker. Speakers in the past have come from a variety of backgrounds including medical, historical, local interest and charitable. The club produces a monthly newsletter called 'Kingfisher' in which all details of the club and forthcoming events can be found, you do not have to be a member to receive the newsletter and anyone with a possible interest in Probus activities can request being placed on the circulation list. To request a copy of The Kingfisher please email Mike White at cpckingfisher.ed@gmail.com

We are currently enjoying our summer recess when we take a break from our regular lunches at Sturdy's Castle. However, we still offer dining opportunities to those members, guests and visitors during that period of rest. Recently we had a very enjoyable lunch at FarmEd near Chipping Norton, and on Wednesday the 5th of August we are holding our annual, and very popular, Curry Supper at Sturdy's. This is an early evening event, 6pm, where we are treated to a Sturdy's speciality Curry, there is no speaker for this event. The following month, on September 2nd, we return to our regular programme of Speaker Lunches at Sturdy's on this occasion featuring our own Liz Leffman as our guest speaker. If you are interested in attending this, or any of our lunches and after lunch talks please contact the club secretary, Simon Handley email: simon.handley8@icloud.com

During the year we also offer opportunities to attend special events, thus far this year we have enjoyed a classical concert at the Birmingham Symphony Hall and a Civil War Walk at Banbury, and yet to come we have a visit to Waterperry Gardens.
