The PROBUS Club of Charlbury and District
Charlbury Probus is an informal and relaxed club for semi-retired and retired people from all backgrounds and walks of life. We aim to provide a variety of activities, visits and social events to entertain and amuse our members and their guests. New members are always welcome to join us at our lunch meetings and Social events, the contact details can be found at the foot of this page.
Lunches are quite informal and are held monthly at Sturdy's Castle, near Kidlington, a 20 minute drive from Charlbury. To assist in travelling to our lunches we have a successful car share scheme in operation. There is usually a one or two course meal, which is followed by a guest speaker. Speakers in the past have come from a variety of backgrounds including medical, historical, local interest and charitable. The club produces a monthly newsletter called 'Kingfisher' in which all details of the club and forthcoming events can be found, you do not have to be a member to receive the newsletter and anyone with a possible interest in Probus activities can request being placed on the circulation list.
The next scheduled lunch meeting is on Wednesday the 4th of March when we will be holding our Annual General Meeting, there will be no speaker for this event. Our next scheduled meeting with lunch and speaker will be on Wednesday the 1st of April. For this meeting we have a guest speaker, Chris Coltrane, from the Thames Valley Police. He will speaking to us on the contemporary and increasing crime of online and phone scamming, and what we can do to guard against being caught out by these relentless criminals. If you are interested in attending this, or any of our lunches and after lunch talks please contact the club secretary, Simon Handley email: simon.handley8@icloud.com
The following lunches will be on Wednesday the 6th of May and the 3rd of June when our speakers will be Fergus Butler-Gallie, the Vicar of St. Mary's Church, Charlbury, who will be talking about his writings and reflections on his like in Charlbury, and Robin Phayre who will be speaking on the use of Drones and Robotics in the Civil Sector. If these are subjects that may be of interest to you contact our Secretary on the email listed above,
We are well advanced with planning lunches, trips and events for 2026 and details of these can be found in the club's monthly newsletter 'The Kingfisher'. For a copy of the newsletter please contact the club via the email address at the bottom of this page. Our next 'event' is a coach trip to Birmingham on the 17th of April, the main focus being an afternoon classical music concert featuring the music of Rossini, Puccini and Beethoven. There will also be time for a bit of shopping and a spot of lunch before the concert.
