The group has been meeting regularly since being established in June 1978. Previously the name was The Charlbury Beer and Wine Making Circle but with no members now producing their own favourite tipple, the word ‘making’ has been dropped. Our focus today is chiefly on wine, with only occasional tastings of beer.
We meet monthly in the Memorial Hall, usually on the third Monday, with a varied programme including professional and member-led tastings, to which new members and guests are welcome. Our programme also includes vineyard visits, a garden party, walks and a BBQ.
Our February meeting was presented by our member Ursula who introduced us to a selection of wines from her South African homeland.
Our March and April presentations were given by professionals from Waddesdon Manor and Haynes, Hanson & Clark (from Stow-on-the-Wold) respectively and the choices of some excellent wines were greatly appreciated.
May saw us enjoying a very interesting selection of wines chosen by our members Deborah and Chris, inspired by their travel and work in various parts of the world.
In June we had a walking tour of Oxford, on which we visited the OUP Museum and the Weston Library, with lunch taken in Balliol College dining hall.
Our activities have finished for the summer and we resume in September.
Annual membership costs just £10, as do tastings. The fee for guest attendance at tastings is £15.
