I agree with you, Andrew.

The Town Council is in conversation with Iain Nicholson of the Oxfordshire Town Chambers Network to see what can be learnt from experiences elsewhere in the county. Charlbury Business Community (CBC, of which I'm chairman) has been in touch with the district council's Business Development Officer, Will Barton, and Iain and Will have spoken to us over the last year. The issues you raise are of great concern to all.

The CBC also has a tourism officer who explores ways in which Charlbury can raise its profile as a visitor destination. I think it is fair to say that he is little supported by those businesses in the town which would benefit from increased tourist interest.

So Andrew, if you would like to contribute to the effort, the discussions and the work involved (the people concerned all run their own businesses and struggle to find time to cover all the bases), please start by joining the CBC and mucking in. Around 250, maybe more, people make the town their home for work, but the CBC has a membership of 40-45, mostly passive, from which you can draw your own conclusions.

It is easy to come up with excellent ideas for what other people should be doing, rather harder to work at putting some of those ideas into practice. So come on, give us a hand!

They've just advertised the Market Towns Project organiser/coordinator post this week. This is a very interesting initiative and Charlbury is remiss in not having climbed on board properly as yet.

I'll find some job details to post tomorrow.
