Tue 25 Oct 2022, 16:08 After years of anxiety when my kids - ages 5 year apart so this was a decade of "little children" - insisted on their independence and agency to go to school on their own there was never lighted traffic crossing from the heavily child-populated The Green and Ticknell Piece areas. A Lollipop Lady at school time was no use for after school classes coming home, especially after the stupidity repeated each year of altering the clock* guaranteeing darkness. Surely what we need is Traffic Lighted Controls (with cameras recording for miscreants|) rather than waste a proportion of the money on painting widely ignored white stripes. And then what about traffic lighted Pelican Crossings at the dangerous Enstone/Slade X roads? *I arrived in England during the years when there was a permanent BST time experiment. Although coming from Canada which people deem "cold and north" most of the inhabited zones are at much more southerly latitudes! Most of England (sic) is in the southern tip of Hudson's Bay - Tundra landscape. But the bloody Scots ignored cold, hard, fact from accident statistics of kids going to School in the dark versus coming |*home* in the dark. So the plan was scrapped. And bicycle lights were rubbish in those days. Due to the Circadian rhythm of people and the inevitable (anyone up for mandatory amphetamine speed drugs to all drivers?) the markedly increased rate of injury and death to children coming home from school in the dark when drivers' cognisance is compromised went waaay down compared to the light mornings. Morning accident during light rush hour went down significantly! Much more than afternoon, overall big decrease. In other words sentimentalist illogic triumphed over science numerical fact. Is the Zebra x-ing just seen as a winnable and lower cost political option? |
