Wonderful news just announced- all 18 polished gold plated mirrors have unfolded properly! Now comes weeks of tiny adjustments to align them all for perfect images in infra-red light of light from the earliest minutes of when light first burst forth.

Why gold and not silver coloured metal? Turns out gold is really good at reflecting infra-red. I must have missed that in Optics 101.

Feels beyond belief that it has finally crawled (part way) out of the’ol gravity well as it seems to have been “only a few more years “ hence to launch since I was a young whippersnapper!

Though now I’m worried that someone lubricated a hinge with WD40 fish-oil to keep to schedule when the proper bottle ran empty.

If someone at NASA can forget to convert feet to metre’s for the parachute operation on a Mars lander…
