Fri 10 Sep 2021, 23:28 ... by William Boyd P35 "Her husband was an Englishman, Vincent Hobhouse, a solicitor and magistrate, who lived and practised in Charlbury, a small town (my italics) near Oxford in the Evenlode valley". Others no doubt know of this but I didn't till I started reading it recently. Charlbury features in a small later scene from which it's obvious Boyd at least visited. It may do again - I've 300 pages to go so no spoilers please! Alas, at P69: "...Vincent Hobhouse died ... from being run over by a motor bus in Charlbury High Street." But as this 'event' took place in 1915 I'm not calling for witnesses... |
