Thanks to Malcolm and also those who contacted us directly. We offered food and water yesterday and tried to keep an eye out for local cats. The pigeon either flew off of its own volition or someone collected it in the course of the evening.

Sometimes ringed pigeons may be racers amd be surprisingly tame, to the point of being closely approached near enough to read the ring number, or even handled, if approached in the "correct way" such as with offers of foood or water - food if the pigeon has an appetite and isn't put off feeding by illness, hence the offer of water - preferably rainwater so it doesn't stink of chlorine and additives etc - as they can get quite thirsty if not mobile or ill.

Then you can read off the ring numbering code and ISTR there is a database one can consult to find the titular keeper/owner.

Years ago there was a telephone number one could ring with this sort of information. I'm assuming there is still a way of doing this identification, probably online. If it could be done by phone in Brighton and South London when I lived there, years and years ago...it should be easier now for the 'net connected..?

A pigeon with a yellow ring on its leg has been standing on the drive at Tregonwell, Crawborough for a while now (it was there on our return home so don’t know how long). We can’t see any obvious injury but it seems unable to move. If it might be yours could you check it, or if you know who the owner might be please could you alert them?
