Travelling to London

I'm having to travel to/from London a lot just now.  Much prefer to go by train but the last 3 times have needed to drive.  Just to warn - the traffic in and out on the A40/M40 is often horrendous, presumably because people aren't using public transport so much.  Haven't checked but I'd guess it's now well above pre-covid levels.  And at least in the N1/NW1/3/5 area, there are roadworks everywhere, a lot of them connected with HS2 (Debate section topic: Surely now the White Elephant of the century?!).
