I don't think that COVID-19 has taken away the singing part is entirely consistent with the facts. Jerusalem is being sung, as is the national anthem, and whilst Land of Hope and Glory is typically more of a choral piece, Rule Britannia has always had a soloist, albeit that the crowd will join in at some point (which will be absent this year).

Actually it was covid that "took away" the singing part of the last night. Some newspapers chose to interpret it another way.

The Last Night of the Proms is the 12th September not tonight tonight is the First Night

Tonight the new Proms, but open your doors and sing out loud .Do not let the BBC take that away from us.I shall be singing outside hoping it won’t be raining too hard.
