It was on Saturday during the day and they were commercial / private ones. I know about the exercises performed at night (normally on a Tuesday)

There is a crescent of airspace running northwestwards round Oxford from RAF Benson  that is a Night Operations training area. You may sometimes hear two helicopters but see only one (no lights on the other one). Also, as Brize Norton is the main RAF Air Transport hub in the UK, there are airborne movements of military kit from time to time. They may be moving a few Corona virus masks at the moment!

Support our military, they need to train for both combat and humanitarian missions whenever and wherever our politicians may send them.

I'd assumed it's the military doing their night-flight training, taking advantage of the winter darkness to get it out of the way a bit earlier in the evening than they could at other times of the year. Just a guess though. The hovering and low circling on Thursday seemed to be centred on the Rangers' Lodge / Chilson Hill sort of area.
