Over 130 local councils in the UK have already declared a Climate Emergency, including Witney Town Council, West Oxfordshire District Council and Oxfordshire County Council, and we'd like Charlbury to join this nationwide grassroots movement to get effective action on climate change. If you haven't already signed the petition to Charlbury Town Council, calling on it to recognize the Climate Emergency and work with local residents, businesses and other councils to encourage and promote the transition to a sustainable economy, you can find a copy of the petition and sign-up sheets on the reception desk of the Community Centre (with thanks to the team there for their support).  The text of the petition is as follows:

To: Charlbury Town Council

The UK Government has now put into law that the UK has a target of “net-zero greenhouse gas emissions” by 2050. The scientific consensus is that radical change must come much sooner, and start immediately, with 2030 an ambitious but necessary target date.

We call on Charlbury Town Council to:

1) Declare that it recognizes an Environment and Climate Emergency

2) Examine the Council’s current and future policies and decisions to ensure that they are consistent with averting further climate change and ecological collapse

3) Use its scope for influence within the community and with other stakeholders to encourage and promote the rapid transition to a sustainable local economy and a low carbon energy and transport system

4) To open discussions with local businesses, landowners and voluntary groups, and with the district and county councils, on how all can work together to deliver significant change
