Wed 23 Jan 2008, 13:23 Hi Lesley-Anne If its just the drinking water that annoys you then just filter your water, either with a filter jug or a plumbed in one. If you are looking at reducing scale throughout the house you have two options: You can buy a proper water softner which you have to add salt to but it properly removes the hardness. You will still have to filter the drinking water anyway as you can't drink the water then. We filter our water that we drink and use an electronic descaler which doesn't actually remove the hardness but instead changes it so it doesn't stick to anything in the house, meaning that appliances, taps and showers stay scale free. Costs about £5 a year in electricity Just incase you were interested or need to set your dishwasher correctly, according to Thames water the water hardness levels in Charlbury are: Clarke: 18.0 - Simon |

Wed 23 Jan 2008, 12:44 We have had a water softener for a number of years and find it very effective. It is plumbed into the water supply in the kitchen before the boiler so that the hot water is softened - it is the type to which you add salt to recharge the system. It certainly reduces the amount of detergent etc that we use. (It should not be used on the drinking water supply). Ours was supplied and fittedby Banbury Water softeners who also deliver salt. |

Wed 23 Jan 2008, 10:56 I find the water in Charlbury so hard and wonder if anyone in Charlbury has a water softener? We are thinking of having one fitted but there are so many to choose from and we are unsure as to whether they are really effective - can anyone offer any suggestions? |
