Flooding from spring wells.

I would welcome any advice Charlbury householders may have who have spring wells in their cellars or gardens, and have dealt satisfactorily with their maintenance. Despite electric pumps, and a back up electricity battery, my cellar had an inch of water in it last weekend after the storm. It seems a waste of electricity, never mind water! Gravity flow seems more sensible, but of course my cellar is beneath road level. Does anyone know of expert advice that might be available to deal with the problem. Thames Water show little interest......or knowledge.
