British Gas scam?

I don't know if this is yet another scam, but looking on the internet suggests that it is. You get a recorded message phone call claiming to be British Gas and asking you to supply a meter reading after pressing a button on your phone. As BG does not have our phone number it made me suspicious. Reports from others on the internet say that after replying as requested they find themselves signed up to another gas company - so beware.
