What's the furthest downline that commuters start from?

How far up the down track do commuters to London and Oxford and Reading et al start from in any realistic numbers? Has anyone collected the statistics? I'm wondering about a 15-30 minute shuttle service to Platform 3 at Oxford rather than trying to cram through trains into the bottleneck of the Oxford/GWR mainline all the way through. Sort of like they do it in Holland with their spiders' web of single track commuter lines that work so well.
