Nice one, John. I use your PWS data daily. One of Charlbury's finest institutions.

Malcolm, it was at 3.46PM that day. My anemometer is at the WMO standard height of 10m above ground, and I believe the 10m height is intended to bring the instrument above any ground friction effects. Mine isn't quite WMO standard as it's above the ridge of the house roof and there's a tree not too far away to the NW of it.

What time was this gust? We're at the top of the hill by Enstone X roads so more exposed than your siting in the Paddocks. I had a window open the merest crack and in the middle f the night the sudden loud noise and the abrupt opening of the window on its hinges and curtains blown out vigorously made me and the dogs leap off our beds!

I can only think that the wind hitting the flat sided 60 foot long face of the house created enough vortex to move the window light on its hinges. Never experienced that before.

Incidentally would an anemometer in the west edge of the Green being at the top of the slope be a good site location being up higher?

Clive, pavement.it è un website molto interessante... ma niente a che vedere con gli alberi di Natale!

We had a mid week post Christmas break and on returning this evening discovered the whole iron wall bracket, funnel and tree, outside our house, lying on the pavement. It could have killed someone walking underneath. What a gust and a half that must have been!

One of the bracketed Christmas trees had come down in Thames St - maybe avoid walking underneath them for now.
