Possibly a hornet mimic hoverfly. We had them this summer and are convincingly like hornets, but are completely harmless. Well known for creating panic in houses.

Giant woodwasp.  They look scary but are harmless.

If it made any noise, it was probably a mutterfly.

This evening a huge flying, large-winged insect invaded our home. It looked like a hornet but then had wings like a moth. I managed to guide it outside. Any suggestions? A Hoth or a Mornet?
