Darning skills - for restoring woollen jersey

If it's a true Aran sweater, ie has cables and maybe stitch patterns, darning's probably not going to work - at least if you want it restored.  But you won't alert the Aran Sweater Police if you apply leather elbow patches - very authentic.  

Actually, Aran sweaters and fishermen's ganseys use to be knitted from the top down, so that the sleeves and the body could be picked up and reknitted if needed.  It might be worth having a look?   (that wouldn't work with a modern sweater 'cos you can't change direction.
