A simple google search of :

“What is the purpose of cutting grass verges on rural roads” , provides many conflicting answers from different parts of the country.  The extent of not mowing in May , then June , and now July , has covered warning signs and marker posts .

How far into August can I stretch this before it looks like I live on a wasteland? (Asking on behalf of my neighbours)

Please check for hedgehogs before you mow or strim. They tend to curl up rather than run away and we are seeing some horrid hedgehog injuries at the moment. Poor little ‘ Mo’ last week had 2 badly damaged legs.

Have corrected, Hanover Close ! Currently ox-eye daisies are particularly striking there, it would be interesting to do a list of flowers and grasses on the site. Orchids have been found there in previous years.

I just walked over to Hanover Close and what a stunning array of wildflowers there are there, a great example of No Mow May in Charlbury, and it's a brilliant argument for no mow May, June and July. Do go and look soon because unfortunately I think it's going to be cut next week :-(

Just a reminder and encouragement to leave an area of your lawn or verge for flowers and insects in the spring and early summer. Even if you have already mown this year, that can often be good for wildflowers as they will have less competition from the vigorous grasses - so it is really worth leaving areas uncut for May and June to see what flourishes.

You can read about the No Mow May movement here: https://nomowmay.plantlife.org.uk

It would be so great to see our wildflowers, insects and bird populations recovering in Charlbury.
