Sun 19 Feb 2023, 13:53 Hedgehogs will be out and about soon. Please open up your gardens so they can get around and find food easily and meet each other ! If you do find a hedgehog that is unwell please put it in a box as John says above and immediately contact our local hedgehog nurse in Over Norton, Mandy on 01608 430 980. If the answer machine is on do leave a message and she'll get back you. PS By closing up access at ground level you will stop hedgehogs moving around, rats climb over fences and walls so you won't stop them. |

Fri 17 Feb 2023, 17:58 How to help a distressed hedgehog Wild hedgehogs are nocturnal animals. A hedgehog out in daylight is usually in trouble and needs help. Sometimes they are found under bird feeders or maybe collapsed on a lawn. In late Spring and Summer, hedgehogs can sometimes be seen at dusk or at dawn. As long as the hedgehog is moving purposefully, then it is probably OK and could be a nursing mother looking for something to eat before heading back to her nest. To rescue a hedgehog, pick up with gloves or scoop up in a towel. Put hedgehog in a box with high sides and give him a towel or fleece to hide under. Bring him inside, put a shallow bowl of water in the box and keep him somewhere quiet and warm whilst you contact a rescue. It is very important to offer the hedgehog some water but please check with a rescue before giving anything to eat – starving hedgehogs can die if they are given too much to eat too quickly. It is best to get the hedgehog to a rescue as quickly as possible, but if there is any delay and you want to feed the hedgehog, most hedgehogs will eat soft cat food mashed up with a little water and cat or kitten biscuits. If you know hedgehogs visit your garden, then please continue to leave out water and cat or kitten biscuits during the winter. If a hibernating hedgehog is disturbed in the middle of winter, when food is scarce, they will often return to a garden where they found food in the summer. |
